Welcome to Speed Repping

I recently had the opportunity to attend a “Speed Repping” event held by the liberal group, Indivisible. As many of you know, Indivisible came out against MVLA in the Times News; and it is also responsible for the “No King” protests at 5-points in Twin Falls. So many of you might ask why I would attend such an event… well, my curiosity was peaked. So, I decided to go and share my thoughts. I had never heard of “Speed Repping”, but it was explained sort of like speed dating. Eleven elected officials and leaders from our area were seated at six different tables. The point of the evening was for the public to go from table to table, in ten-minute rounds, speaking to different leaders about concerns or asking questions.

Speed Dating I Wouldn’t Choose Over 90% of Them

The tables included: TF City School Superintendent Brady Dickerson with Board Trustee Heidi Tubbs; CSI President Dean Fisher with Trustee Anna Scholes; TF City Councilmen Jason Brown and Spenser Cutler; TF City Manager Travis Rothweiler and Mayor Ruth Pierce; and TF County Commissioners Brent Reinke and Don Hall. The last table was TF County Assessor, Brad Wills, also known as my boss and my opponent in the upcoming May primary.

The Missing Spoke Volumes

Our Legislative District 24 & 25 State Senators and Representatives were invited to attend, however, each one of them either declined the invitation or did not reply. So, Indivisible set up a seventh table with pictures of the missing six, their email responses, manilla envelopes with each of their addresses on them, and note cards. I saw a lot of people writing questions or comments to the different legislators, which were then supposed to be mailed. The interesting part was I did not see any such setup for other county officials, such as Clerk Kristina Glascock, Prosecuting Attorney Grant Loebs, Treasurer Rebecca Peterson, Coroner Will Carson, or Sheriff Jack Johnson. I can only guess that Indivisible wanted to showcase how the legislators did not attend for political reasons and didn’t really care if the county elected officials were present, we may never know.

Actually Impressed

I didn’t know what to expect as my views and that of Indivisible differ greatly, but overall, it was a nice event. There was no talk of politics or campaigning, it was strictly an opportunity to speak to local leaders. There were also no obscenity shouting protesters, everyone was respectful, and I didn’t hear any raised voices.

The Lion’s Den

As the evening was coming to a close, I walked up to the front table where Wendy, one of the event coordinators, thanked me for coming. As we continued to speak, I told her that I work for the county and to be truthful, I am on the board of MVLA. She surprised me by telling me that she knew who I was and that I had entered the lion’s den and I survived. I took it jokingly, as I believe it was offered, but there was some truth to it. Ever since Indivisble opened a chapter here in Twin Falls, they have taken every chance given to bash MVLA. But I have to say, even though they knew who I was, they were welcoming and gracious.
