Every time a family in this state buys bread, milk, or fresh produce, the state takes its cut. For an average Idaho family of four, groceries cost between $10,200 and $13,363 a year (CT Insider, 2024; Ramsey Solutions, 2025). At a 6% sales tax, that means $612 to $802 paid right at the register. That is money that never feeds a child, never fills a pantry, and never nourishes a family.

Only 13 states still tax groceries at the full rate (Tax Foundation, 2025). Idaho is one of them. Food is not a discretionary purchase. Taxing it is both economically harmful and morally wrong.
